RESEARCH METHODS
MODULE OUTLINE
Research Methods acts as an anchor to introduce the pedagogical approach and the role of research and its relation to architecture as an impetus to knowledge acquisition in the Master of Architecture programme. The module introduces a range of architectural research methods. It emphasizes on developing the student’s abilities in carrying out self-directed research through the discussion of various architectural research methods and the development of research skills. The course work employs a major focus to the critical discourses on contemporary issues pertinent to architecture and the role of research to address such issues. The module will also expose students to the rigor of intensive reading, writing and discussion whose product will provide a solid foundation for subsequent Dissertation modules.
PROJECT 1 : RESEARCH METHODS
In groups of 2-3 students, conduct literature search and write an explanation of the following:
-
The role of research in architecture
-
Basic steps in research process
Subsequently, explain the different research methodology, research designs and methods used in architecture. Correlational research is chosen as the research method for this project.

FINAL RESEARCH METHOD:
Through this project, I was able to be exposed to what research really meant and the various methods involved. I was also equipped with further understanding and knowledge towards terminologies that will be further implied during the research proposal and for future dissertation purposes.
PROJECT 2 : RESEARCH PROPOSAL
This assessment introduces the basic terminologies and content of research proposal. Individually, produce a Research Proposal of a selected area of research in architecture. Research proposal should employ the architectural research methodologies and methods suitable to the research framing the data collection and analysis towards a specific research question. The proposal is a research plan that will continue into the final assessment in the form of a Research Paper.
FINAL RESEARCH PROPOSAL:
Through this project, I was able to read many research papers, journals and articles and be further exposed towards proper research writing formats and sequence. This project also set a prelude towards the steps in generating a research question which will be implied for further dissertation purposes. The writing of literature reviews is also a new aspect learnt through this project along with the correct and suitable methodology used for the selected topic.
