BUILDING MATERIALS
MODULE OUTLINE
This module intends to inform the student of the relevant visual and physical properties of a wide range of building materials. It also encompass the broad environmental debate by including energy saving and recycled materials. For each material the module describes the manufacturing process, salient properties and typical uses of these materials, with the aim of ensuring their appropriate application within the awareness of the suitability of the physical and chemical properties as well as its ecological impact. Students will undergo a series of continuous assessments such as project and tests to ascertain the objective and outcome of the module is achieved.
PROJECT 1 : CLASSIFICATION OF BUILDING MATERIALS
The task of this project is to select an architect and their building that utilizes several types of building materials, namely stones, concrete, brick and glass. The students are required to analyze the materials that are used by the Architect for the building that is chosen and produce a presentation board that explains the characters of the building materials and how these materials relate with the surrounding context.

In groups of 3, me, Madeline and Amelisa chose to further our research on the vertival stone house by Henkin Shavit.

REFLECTION
Through this project, I was able to identify and analyze 3 major building materials used in the construction industry which are glass, concrete and stone. On the other hand, I also gain knowledge on how the usage of these three materials could influence the theme and concept of the building. This project also provided a platform for me to know more architects as well as their work which exposed me to more buildings which will be inspirations in the future.

In groups of 5, students have to select a building (fun, creative space) which allows them to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module with a standard of at least 15 materials. my group members are :
Me, Amelisa, Madeline, Kwang Zhou and Jian Xiang.
We chose VCR cafe as our building to further our research on the building materials used.

REFLECTION
Through this project, I was able gain more knowledge on more varieties of building materials, their characteristic, physical qualities and usage. I was also able to gain more understanding in how the choice of materials used can affect the spatial experiences, mood and ambience of a space. On the other hand, I was able to learn how to design presentation boards using adobe photoshop which was my first time using computer aided softwares.
