ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I

MODULE OUTLINE

Architectural Design Studio 1  is an introduction to architectural design. This preliminary design module aims to present and explains design through the expression of the perception of ‘self’ and the body. Students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises and assignments that introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design. The objectives of this module is to allow exploration with generation of ideas and concepts through interdisciplinary modes of art and design. It also allows student to examine the expression of the ‘self’ as means of exploring how the ‘body’ relates to space. The basic architectural design notions such as scale and proportion, design principles and materiality are introduced as well. Awareness of spatial quality and how it is alos created through the application and manipulation of the aforementioned design notions.

PROJECT 1 : SELF EXPRESSION THROUGH OBJECT ‘REPRESENTING ME’

This is an ice breaking project which introduces basic understanding of the design processes and approaches in generating ideas, formulating conceptual narratives, developing design and translating it into form design. The main objective of the project is for student to unravel their creative side and inner self through several specific modes of communication or art form. Students will have to undestand themselves in aspect of personal interests, preferences, attitude and personality. These ideas and qualities will later on is applied to an artwork worn on specific parts of the body, mostly parts of the body that is use for creativity and making. Students can choose to make either a mask , helmet or a glove for this preject.

I personally chose to make a 1/2 mask, 1/2 helmet model to represent my simple yet complicated personality.

REFLECTION

Through this project, I was able to have a better understanding of myself and to project my own personality through a model. I was able to gain better skills in designing a model which has a depth in design concept and excecution. In addition, I was eposed to more variety of materials for building models to suit my concept.

PROJECT 2 : SELF EXPRESSION THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL SPACE " FURNITECTURE "

The main aim of Project 2 is to expand the interpretation of the self (or multiple self) by exploring the relationships between human body and designed form. The student or students as the user or users will define the intention of the space and its form based on their personality and human body. In this project students will also be introduced to basic design principles such as rudimentary ways in which to order and organize spaces and forms. Furthermore develop an understanding of scale and proportion with relation to the human body.

Our group leader was chosen as the user for this furnitecture where we further explore his needs and preferences.

REFLECTION

Through this project, I was able to understand the user's body in relation to the furnitecture created. I also gained knowledge on anthropometry and egonormics which will maximize the suitability of the user when using the furnitecture. On the other hand, this project acted as platform for me to improve my design skills as well as presentation board ideas and layouts. I also learnt how to work with different people along the way.

PROJECT 3 : HIDE-OUT "SPACE FOR THE SELF"

In this project, students are required to design a space for the self by attaching it to the walls/surfaces of an imagined ‘city’ in an empty abandoned lot in between two buildings. The space is to fit a specific use (as a dream space: for viewing, space for contemplating, space for selfexploration, space for exercising, space for dreaming, space showcasing and so to speak a dream space for the user). As the user of the space you can make your personality more interesting, an effective well thought of theme and written narrative is essential.

I decided to create a hide-out for myself to unleash the 2 extreme personality in me which is the feminine and masculine side without having to take others condemnation into consideration.

REFLECTION

Through this project, I was able to improve my workmanship model wise and drawing skills applied on the presentation boards. I was also able to have a kick start in designing my own hide-out using my very own narrative which was quite challenging for me as I struggle to finalize my design ans floor plans for the model. I also gained lots of architectural knowledge during the whole process of tutorials untill the final outcome. Lastly, time management is what I think should be improved as I struggled a lot due to weak discipline in the process of actualizing the final model and presentation boards.
