THEORIES
THEORIES OF URBANISM
MODULE OUTLINE
The subject offers a thematic inquiry into architectural and urban theory in the broader context of philosophical schools of thought and cultural and social conditions, which may include modernism, postmodernism, phenomenology, semiotics, post-structuralism, deconstruction and critical regionalism. These themes will guide the organization of weekly lecture and discussions, which will proceed from the establishment of a basic theoretical apparatus to the examination of specific cases. These will supply us with tools for the analysis of specific architectural situations. Students will develop a written synopsis of a designated reading, and an in-depth and analytical research paper on the designated topic.
PROJECT 1 : CASE STUDY - YIZHONG STREET, TAIWAN
In this project, we were divided into groups of 10 with an assigned site to be used as the case study. My group was assigned with YiZhong Street, Taichung, Taiwan, where we are to conduct a case study based on the Jan Gehl's book - "Life between Buildings" which includes the built environment and the activities that happens in between.
FINAL PRESENTATION BOARDS :

REFLECTION
Through this project, I was able to gain an insight towards the extend of influence the built environment can cause to the activities being incited in between. It was really an interesting project where I was able to study and read the book by Jan Gehl which increases my knowledge towards the impact of architecture towards the quality of living environment as well as the human behavioural patterns. On the other hand, I was able to learn the patterns of built environment of another country which is Taiwan.
PROJECT 2 : SYNOPSIS
In this project, we are required to read and write a synopsis about the 3 different readers respectively.
FINAL SYNOPSIS :
REFLECTION
This project actually act as a platform for me to be exposed to more readers by famous and well-known people in the architecture industry and have an insight of their thought and arguments towards architecture in various ways. The readers carries deep and informative messages which inspires and incites my thoughts and perception towards architecture.
PROJECT 1B : A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS ESSAY
In this project, we are required to conduct a comparison of our studio site - Jalan Besar, Klang with the first case study given - Yizhong Street, Taiwan in reference to the book of Jan Gehl's - Life between Buildings.
FINAL COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS ESSAY :
REFLECTION
All in all, by carrying out this project, I was able to observe and interpret the similarities and dissimilarities between two distinct country with different culture and quality of built environment. It can be seen that, our country, Malaysia needs a big push in terms of the quality of built environment compared to Taiwan which has better walkability, better outdoor environments and a safer social surrounding which provides a spaces for interaction and communication to occur. Hence, it much depends on us, the future architects to influence and improve the built environment of the country in providing a better living environment for all.
