Essay Question: Problems Cause by Over Usage of Computers

Project Brief:

According to the brief, we were required to choose one essay question out of three:

1. Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games for long hours on a regular basis. What do you think are the causes or effects of this condition? Plan your response, and then write a cause or effect essay.

2. Write a compare or contrast essay about any two professions of your choice. You need to provide relevant evidences to support any selected profession.

3. Identify the steps involved in producing an attractive wall painting or mural art. Then, write a process essay to describe this process.

I chose question no.1, the reason why I chose that question was it is a cause or effect essay. A cause or effect essay is much more easier compared to the other two which are compare or contrast and process essay. On the other hand, the topic was about computers which are related to our daily lives and it is what I am more familiar to. Therefore, after researching on the problems caused by over usage of computers, I started to write my essay.

THE DREADEST THING EVER!!!!!!

After I have finished my essay, I opened Youtube to watch a music video for a " celebration " for completing my essay. Here comes the dreadest part. My laptop suddenly hanged for no reason and what was in my mind at that particular moment was, OH MY GOD! I DID NOT SAVE MY ESSAY!

And it happened that I had to restart my laptop and REWRITE my essay.

A precious lesson learnt: Press Ctrl + S = Save A Life !!!

-Thankfully, I was able to finish it in 2 hours as I had already written the whole essay once.

My Essay:

We are then required to hand in another essay report which was analyzed by a website called Turnitin. It analyzes written essays and identify how much percentage of information were extracted from the internet. The ideal percentage is 20% while mine was 24%. However, Ms. Thivilojana said it was okay for now as long as it is below 40% but she also stated that for the next essay it should always be below 20%.

Reflection:

Through this project, I have learnt to produce a complete essay which consist of pre-writing, the essay itself and references. It was not easy to write an essay without any grammar mistakes. According to Ms. Thivilojana's comment, I need to work hard on my grammar and spelling mistakes as I was so careless by making some simple mistake. Therefore, I will double check my essay to make sure that it has the least mistakes in it.

In addition, I also learnt how to include citations in my essay. I have done many researches on the topic of problems caused by over usage of computers and able to analyze the points gathered and construct them into sentences. Besides learning how to write an essay, I also learnt how to write references in the correct way according to the APA citation style.

Although I did not get a good grade for this essay, but I have learnt many precious writing skills which are far more important compared to the grades. Therefore, after this project, I will pratice to write better essays so as to improve my writing skills.
