Daily Items

Project Brief:

This project is a group project where students are required to use given daily items to produce 9 artworks which has the 10th artwork when view as a whole. In addition, studetns are to relate each piece of artwork with one design principle. The requirements of this project are:

- 9 artworks

- 2 presentation boards

We were divided into a group of 4, my group were:

1. Lee Yet Yee

2. Chang Huey Yi

3. Heng Sy Hua

4. Tan Min Chuen

We choose to work with the material plastic tube.

TUTORIALS & PROGRESS:

We came out with our first idea which our theme was about "personalities". We intend to relate different personalities to the characteristics of the plastic tube. However, our first idea got rejected as it was too compicated and hard to be presented in just 3 minutes of time. In addtion, personalities as the theme is not strong enough to represent the material plastic tubes.

All of us were in a brain dead situation where we can;t think of any other better theme to replace our previous one which was rejected by Ms.Renee. Therefore, we had our second meeting outside Taylor's which was at SS15 at Owl Espresso. We sat there for the whole afternoon brainstroming ideas and ways that can best portray the speciality of our material. At last, we decided to work on the restoring force within the plastic tube as well as the deforming force from the rubber sheet.

We started to make our artworks as soon as we got the green light from our tutor. The process was very tiring as the rubber sheet is very thick. It was very hard to pierce the plastic tube through the rubber sheet. Therefore, one piece of artwork took us about 5 hours to complete and our fingers were nearly bleeding. However, we manage to finish everything on time.

THE FINAL OUTCOME:

Reflection:

This project did not went well for my group as our concepts and themes were too complicated. There were too many things going on in our artworks where the audience could not grasp the main point that we were trying to portray. On the other hand, the title and theme that we gave our artwork was also inappropriate. My confidence was again defeated in this project as I was not able to be creative enough or think futher enough to achieve what I aimed for. In total, the lesson that I have learnt through this project was to keep things in a simple and pleasant way, the word simplicity but with aesthetic value.

On the other hand, I was also able to learn how to work with different materials in producing artworks. This was the very first time I have used a plastic tube to come out with an artwork. It was challenging but fun at the same time. I have learned to be bold in my design and concepts instead of beating around the bush without showing the main point.

Lastly, I also learned how to communicate with my group members where I learn how to accept what others have in opinion instead of just agreeing to my opinions only. I have learned how to analyze situations and problems where I was able to solve every one of them throughout the whole process. All in all, after this project, I really do have a slight phobiia with anything that has to do with force like elastic force, deforming force and even the material itself- plastic tube.
