Project 2: Group Work

City Model & Presentation

After the individual submission of the pamphlet, the best city will be chosen to be developed further for the group work which was to make a model of the whole city scaled to 1:20,000 and 2-3 presentation boards describing the city. Students may choose to make zoom in models as the scale for the city model was too small.

We were divided into groups of 4 and my team mates are:

1. Lee Yet Yee ( Me )

2. Mike Liew Chern Ching

3. Liew Quo Ming

4. Law Jia Xin

Chosen Environment: FOREST

However, there were just 3 of us left as Law Jia Xin was hospitalized due to some serious health issues. Therefore, the workload on our team will definitely increase as she is a "strong one" in our batch. Losing her in our team will definitely affect the outcome of everything. Despite that, I was not upset or disappointed, I sincerely wish her with a speedy recovery.

Quo Ming city- Canatropic was chosen.

He had a good master plan with a buildable layout. But his city was lacking of many details and component, therefore we had a few meetings to discuss about the improvements and changes that has to be made.

Project Brief:

We had only 3 weeks to make the models and presentation boards, therefore we started right away after the first tutorial where we made the mock-up of our model.

It was not to scale as it was just to show a brief layout of the city and a picture of how it will look like. The mock-up took us about 3 hours to finish and I was quite proud of it until I heard Ms.Iffa's comment on it. I was quite sad and kind of shed some tears after the tutorial but what Ms Iffa said was true. So I chose to be optimistic and to do better for the actual model.

I realised our group was lack of planning, therefore we had more group meetings to plan and decide on the details of the model and presentation boaards.

Ms. De announced that we were going to do something different for this project where all our cities will be connected to become a MEGACITY ( metropolitan ). It was quite interesting but thiis why we had to make a model with an unreasonable scale which is 1:20,000.

SATURDAY:

Mike and I started making the box for our model to be placed on while Quo Ming draw the master plan of the city. I also planned the layout of the presentation boards, but unfortunately, mike lost it. ><

SUNDAY:

I was assigned to make a zoom in model for the source of energy of our city which is the photoflow.

The main components of a photoflow is a base and a solar plate. I used recyclable items to make this model.

For the base, I used a small glass bottle and removed the cover. Then I used unwanted cardboard to make a base for the solar plate to be attached on. Using the same cardboard, I drew a octagon and colored the octagon according to the actual solar plate.

Lastly, I wrapped the base with blue rubbish bin bag. I was quite pleased with the outcome of the model as it looked almost exactly the same as the real one.

MONDAY:

The master plan was ready in the afternoon while Mike and I worked on the city model. Gratefully we were able to finish the city model around 4.50am which was Tuesday morning. I worked the whole day without any sleep.

TUESDAY:

Despite without having any sleep for the whole day, I continued making the zoom in model which was the bio-dome. I decided not to slack as submission was made earlier which was pushed forward to Wednesday. We were required to place all our models and presentation boards in Coda by 6.00pm on Wednesday and I couldn't afford to lose a second.

I made the zoom in model of the bio-dome scaled to 1:1540. It was challenging as we did not plan for the zoom in model. Therefore, I had to plan while making the model. One step at a time. I worked non-stop assembling every tiny little detail. Even a single tree was made to perfection.

I was able to finish the model around 7.30am in the next day. Another day without sleep.

WEDNESDAY:

I went back to my room around 8.30am and slept till 7.30pm. Then I went back to the open space at E5 to do some final touch up for the zoom in model. Mike and Quo Ming were out to print the presentation boards. When they were back, I suggested to make an additional zoom in model which is the super tree. It is also one of the source of energy in the city other than photoflow.

After finishing up everything, I went back to my room around 2.30am and planned for the presentation.

One zoom in model of photoflow

One zoom in model of super tree

Presentation:

I was assigned for the presentation. First, I introduced myself as the mayor of the city and promoted my city to the lecturers. I gave an introduction of canatropic and why is the city named so. It is the combination of canopy and tropical region, therefore, it was named Canatropic City.

Then, I move on explaning the master plan which covers all the location of each area. Our city consist of 2 layers which are the ground layer and above ground layer. I then explained every area at the ground layer which are the mixed use area, industrial area, commericial area, forests reserve, forest park and the transportation system.

Moving on, I explained about the above ground layer which consist of agricultural area, residential area and a bio-dome.

The sexiest thing in our city is the bio-dome where there are governmental buildings, commercial buildings, monorail station, religious buildings and pocket parks in it.

Lastly, I explained the source of energy of the city which are the super trees and photoflows by using the zoom in model we have built.

I concluded my presentation with a 4 letter word.

     B- Bio-dome

     E- Ecological-friendly

     S- Sustainable

     T- Technologically-wise

Therefore, it's the BEST CITY YOU CAN EVER HAVE!!!

Our HAPPY faces when we finished our presentation.

Reflection:

Through this project, I have learnt all the details about a city like the components of a city, the basic necessities of a city, zoning of a city, waste management , technologies and many more. I also learnt how to build models which were quite challenging for me. I managed to think out of the box and use my creative thinking skills in choosing the materials used for the city model and the zoom in models. I also gained a few techniques in making models. After finishing the bio-dome, I showed it to Ms Iffa and she said the chunks of glue on top of the bio-dome spoiled everything. I went back and re-do the bio-dome where I handle the glue carefully. The bio-dome was made perfectly without any stains of glue on it.

I realized that I have improved a lot compared to the first project which was the infographic pop up poster. I have more endurance to stress and workload which is a good thing for me as I am easily stressed out. On the other hand, I also realized another weakness in me. I will get frustrated easily like a volcanic that will explode in split seconds when I am tired. Therefore, I will try my best to change myself so as to become a better person in the future.

Lastly, I am very happy that I have exposure to city planning in foundation as some of my friends from other universities who are studying architecture now did not have the chance to plan a city in foundation. This project is a project that will prepare me for the upcoming projects in degree and I am very grateful to the lecturers who gave us this project as I can benefit the most from it.
