Back To Our Roots

Project Brief:

This project was divided into two parts which is group work and individual. For the group work, students were required to form a group of 2 person.

My group:

1. Lee Yet Yee ( Me )

2. Chang Huey Yi

We were then asked to choose either side of family to futher our investigation for the infographic-board to be submitted. After a while of discussion, we decided to further our research on my family, which was my father's side.

We were also required to make a documentary or interview video as a proof for all the information we have gathered. Therefore, I prepared many questions to ask my dad as my grandparents for my dad's had already passed awa last year. Fortunately, my father kew a lot regarding our family's history so we were able to gain much useful points and knowledge for us to prepare the content of our board.

The Interview Video:

Through the interview, I got to know more about the story of my great-great grandparetns which I have never heard before.

The interview session was quite enjoyable as this was the first time that I actually sat down and listen to the history of my ancestors.

There were many interesting facts and incidents as I was listening therefore, we manage to extract many useful facts about my family's history.

FIRST DRAFT :

After having the interview session, we transfere the information gathered into a graphical timeline of my LEE family.

I decided to design it in a way that the graphical timeline is actually a map with China and Malaysia on it. The reason behind this design was to show how my ancestors travelled from China to Malaysia.

GATHERING PHOTOS :

Having the information and design are not enough, so me and my father went to my uncle's house where all the photo album of my ancestors are kept.

I saw many faces that I have never seen before and also photos of my father when he was young. Most importantly, I found the portrait of the 3 upper generation of my family.

SECOND DRAFT :

Moving on, I decided to design the whole infographic poster into a imperial edict just like the ones during ancient China.

Then, I did some research on the content of the imperial edict and found some edict that was dedicated to the Lee family during the ancient time.

Then, I move on to deisng and plan all the information and layout of the other pages.

ACTUALIZING THE FINAL WORK:

It's very challenging to actualize what I have planned for the poster as most of them involved lots and lots of drawings, cutting, pasting and etc.

Therefore , I distributed the work where I will draw, deisng and write the content of the board and my other group mate do the cutting.

But, before the day of submission, she fell asleep right beside me when I rushed through the night to finish it. But luckily, we managed to finish it on time.

Reflection:

Through this project, I was able to know stories that I have never heard before of my own family's history. I have gained a deeper understanding of my own background and how did the surname Lee came about. On the other hand, I was also given a chance to inherit these stories of my ancestors so that I can pass it down to my children in the future so that they will know more about their mother's side.

Moving on, I have also learnt how to convert information into infographic manner which I did not do so well during Sem 1 in the subject ENBE. Thus, this project have given me a second chance to improve my skills in presenting information and ideas through graphical drawings. This will benefit me in the future as an architect because all the ideas will be presented in drawings. Besides, I have also learnt how to deal with colors in this project. This is the first time I used water colors to color my project. I found it very interesting to use water color in my artwork.

Next, I also learned how to handle many things at the same time. This is because when this project was assigned to us, there are many other projects to do as well. As for this project, it has many little details where I have to spend my time to research on it or plan it out well. However, I was able to pull it off as I arranged my time very well and discipline myself to do my best in all specific topics of this poster.

Lastly, I really enjoyed the whole process of actualizing this project as this is all about the history of my own family that I will treasure once and for all.
