Project 2A: Design Process-Individual

This project was divided into two parts which are the individual part and group work. For the individual part, students were required to produce a graphic journal which comprises of a series of element provided below.

Vegetation

i) Plan view of 10 different types of trees (flowering & non flowering), shrubs, palms and groundcovers/turf.

ii) Elevation drawing of 5 different types of trees (flowering & non flowering), shrubs, palms and groundcovers/turf.

Natural Elements

i) Plan view of rocks and waterways (river/stream/lakes).

ii) Elevation view of above chosen elements

Hardscape

i) Plan view of 5 different patterns of paving (e.g; bricks, concrete, random flagstone, pebbles etc.)

ii) 3 plan or/and elevation views of building with roof shading, pergola, gazebo, pool/fountain.

The main aim of this project is to familiarize students with the ways to draw proper plan views for both hardscapes and softscapes so as to be well prepared for the final project.

Project Brief:

I bought 15 Kurecolor with different colors just for this project as recomended by Ms Iffa. I was quite afraid to use market to color becuase it is not easy to use one to produce harmonious colors. Special techniques were required to produce a good marker coloring.

I tried drawing a few plan views of softscapes and used the markers I bought to render it. I was devastated. Everthing did not go well together. The color did not blend together. It was far more harder than I expected and I was disappointed.

After going through a few projects for the first semester, I have learnt not to give up and to trust myself that I can definitely do it if I work harder.

I practiced coloring using markers for a week with the help of many tutorials on Youtube.

At last, I managed to produce some renderings that were acceptable for a beginner. I was so happy and excited at the same time. Looking at how these 15 colors are able produce a nicely done rendering with some help from the color pencils really surprises me as I thought that the more colors you used, the better it will be.

Reflection:

Through this project, I have learnt how to draw proper elements in landscape architecture like plan views and elevations for softscapes and hardscapes. In addition, I was able to challenge myself to use a new medium to render my drawings. It was a new experience for me and I enjoyed every single bit of it.  Besides rendering, I also picked up some sketching skills and techniques which will help me in the future as an architect.

I also enjoyed using the circle template so much as it was the first time I actually used one. I am very grateful to be able to have this subject in foundation as other universities do not have this subject in theirs. Therefore, I was able to learn and experience more than others.

In a nutshell, I gained lots of knowledge from this project which are very valuable and I sincerely LOVED this subject as it is a extremely interesting subject to study and work on. Thanks to our tutors, Ms Iffa and Ms Reene for they gave us many lectures that are so informative and useful to us.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities:

Learned how to draw elements in landscape architecture

Lifelong Learning

Learned to color using markers and color pencils instead of just color pencils.

Thinking and Problem Solving Skills

Solving the problem that I did not know how to color with markers.
